For decades, Quebec milk producers have made it a point of pride to pass on their land, which is fertile, rich and capable of sustainable production, to their children in order to feed future generations. I t is this desire for continuous improvement that led dairy producers across Canada to request that an environmental life cycle assessment of Canadian milk be conducted.
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Canadian milk, which was conducted according to internationally recognized standards, evaluated the potential impacts of producing one kilo of milk on the environment by considering the necessary steps, from the production of animal food and the release of the milk from the farm to its transportation to the processing plant.
A life cycle analysis of Canadian dairy production was carried out by the AGÉCO Group every 5 years, using data from 2011, 2016 and 2021. The results for Quebec show an improvement in the environmental footprint of dairy producers over these 10 years.
