In 2006, the Fédération des producteurs de lait instituted the Dairy Farm Startup Assistance Program. The purpose of this program is to use quota loans to encourage young people to set up a farm who do not have the opportunity to take over an existing one, so that new dairy operations can start up.
In Quebec, a quantity of 144 kg of butterfat (BF) per day is available annually. The loans are for a minimum of 12 kg of BF per day and a maximum of 16 kg of BF per day.
