Les Producteurs de lait du Québec donated over 1.1 million litres of milk to families suffering from food insecurity in 2019

In 2019, Les Producteurs de lait du Québec (PLQ) donated 1,129,055 litres of milk to less fortunate families, including nearly 40,000 litres of milk to around one hundred organizations throughout the province for the Christmas season.

“Over 500,000 people in Quebec, from children to senior citizens, suffer from hunger. Les Producteurs de lait du Québec is proud to support Food Banks of Quebec in its mission of feeding vulnerable individuals across the province, by offering a continuous supply of milk and dairy products,” stated Bruno Letendre, Chair of Les Producteurs de lait du Québec.

The Quebec dairy industry’s milk and dairy product donation program was set up in 2003. In the last 17 years, producers, transporters and processors in the dairy sector have joined forces to provide over 10.8 million litres of milk, in the form of various dairy products, to the least fortunate in society.

The milk donation program is an authentic milk donation program that is planned on an ongoing and annual basis. In 2019, 815,879 litres of milk were donated to Food Banks of Quebec. Over the year, the PLQ, in collaboration with certain processors, participated in a food donation campaign for those affected by the spring floods. In total, 152,000 litres of milk were donated: 37,500 litres processed into cheese and 114,500 litres of fluid milk. An additional 121,320 litres were donated in December.

In addition to these efforts, the PLQ is providing a total of $50,000 in financial support over five years to Food Banks of Quebec’s food recovery in supermarkets program. This program is designed to reduce food insecurity and waste by rescuing unsold food at supermarkets and bringing it to people who suffer from food insecurity.

Les Producteurs de lait du Québec distributed 39,856 litres of milk to over 120 organizations in Quebec, including:

15,000 litres of milk to Sun Youth for the Montreal region;

1,800 litres to Longueuil’s Action nouvelle Vie organization;

1,150 litres to the Société Saint-Vincent de Paul de Québec;

1,575 litres for Moisson Québec;

2,000 litres for Moisson Saguenay.

Total since 2003: 10,878,044 litres of milk
